But more than just a crazy cat lady, I have a profound fascination for every species of the animal reign. I’m an advocate for animal rights and I resolutely reject cosmetics that still condone animal testing. I eat organic meat very sparsely and I refuse to set foot in zoos where animals are simply entertainment, preferring places that are first and foremost dedicated to their wellbeing and not cold hard cash. So without surprise, you can imagine how excited I was to visit the Sea Turtle Hospital in Marathon on my recent trip to the Florida Keys.

What’s a turtle hospital?

Tourists and boaters are not the only ones to be drawn to the pristine waters of the Florida Keys; in fact, sea turtles have been flocking to this fertile ecosystem for millions of years, equally attracted to the unspoilt natural resources of the area. But the rapidly increasing mass tourism posed a problem: in addition to the strain forced on the delicately balanced ecosystem, sea turtles, along with other animals, were being pressured out of their natural habitat.

Deeply concerned with the increasing number of injured sea turtles in the area, the hospital opened in 1989 with a very precise goal: rescue, rehab, and rehabilitate before releasing their patients back in the ocean when possible.

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that sea turtles have a pretty diverse diet; in fact, these unfussy creatures will eat pretty much anything they can get ahold of. And, unfortunately for them, this includes items that were not meant for them to ingest, like fishing hooks, rope, various kinds of plastic debris including bags and wrapping, and even pieces of tape.

Yeah. Ouch, indeed. Sea turtles can be injured in many other ways, some not always obvious: they can get tangled up in fishing nets (which often results in either the loss of a flipper or, ultimately, drowning), they can catch a destructive virus called fibropapillomatosis that causes the growth of massive tumors that will inevitably affect their movement and sight, or, worse, they can get hit by a boat.

The Turtle Hospital actually has two heart-breaking, large basins full of permanent residents – i.e., rescued turtles that have been hit by a boat causing them to develop the “bubble butt” syndrome, which renders them essentially disabled as it keeps them from fully submerging. Part of their shell, usually right where the boat hull hit, just inexplicably and constantly floats. And, sadly, turtles simply cannot survive in the wild if they can’t get under water.

The other turtles living at the hospital will only be there for a few months, waiting for their rehabilitation to be complete (generally after a surgery for impactions or tumours). They will eventually be released back into the sea, more or less exactly where they were rescued.

Through an engaging and informative programme about our figurative footprint in the ocean, the non-profit hospital educates the public to think twice about our actions and their repercussions. The money they collect is not only used to rescue turtles, but also to conduct research and lobby against behaviours and laws that are harmful to the turtles, the beaches, and the ocean.

How to help turtles in the Florida Keys

Of course, if you are particularly sensible to the cause of injured sea turtles and not physically located in the Florida Keys, the hospital accepts donations from all over the world.

From a more practical standpoint, there are things you can do – very simple, common-sense actions that are too often shrugged at – when you fish or boat that can go a long way to saving the precious lives of sea turtles. For instance, if you see a floating debris, like a fishing or buoy line, pick it up, and dispose of it There are dedicated recycling bins on every single fishing bridge, beach and marina in the Florida Keys. Other examples? Be mindful of the fish you eat, don’t leave garbage in the sea, and don’t engage in illegal fishing activities (which is very strongly regulated in the Keys), or any sea-related activity for that matter.

How to visit the Turtle Hospital in Marathon

• The hospital frequently releases rehabilitated turtles back into the sea. Dates are always announced on their website, so if you time your visit right you might be able to take part in that touching, memorable event!
• The hospital offers eight 90-minute educational tours daily through the hospital facilities and rehabilitation areas. Admission costs $22.00 and is worth every penny.
• Did you fall in love with a turtle during your visit? You can “adopt” one of the permanent residents for just $35 a year, which will help cover the feeding and caring costs.

The ride took me through the thick mangrove forests of the lagoon before it arrived at the pièce de résistance, the beautiful corals – which, thanks to the deep glass bottom, were just a few feet away.

If you can snorkel or dive in the park, go for it! If it was this beautiful over water I can’t imagine what it must be like down there, surrounded by rainbow-coloured fishes and corals.

Visit the Ernest Hemingway House

What a enigmatic man, that Hemingway! His house in Key West is absolutely fascinating and I’m not saying that just because there are over 50 cats on the property (since he and I both have well-documented affection for cats I feel like we would have been kindred spirits, aside from the multiple marriages and suicidal tendencies). It was such a wonderful experience to set foot in his writing den and play with his polydactyl cats. I am very happy with my copy of To Have and Have Not, that I bought in the shop inside his house next to the office where he penned it. Talk about coming full circle!

Eat your weight in Key Lime pie

Whether you get it with meringue or whipped cream, as a chocolate-dipped popsicle, as a milkshake or even deep-fried (yes, you read that right), the Key Lime pie is a must in these parts. I must confess to having eaten the god-sent dessert at least twice a day for the duration of my stay… for research purposes, of course! Where shouldn’t you miss the pie, you ask?

Visit the Sea Turtle Hospital

This was one of my favourite things to do in the Florida Keys. As an animal lover and animal rights defender, I always enjoy visiting places that are first and foremost dedicated to their wellbeing and not cold hard cash. Through an engaging and informative program about our figurative footprint in the ocean, the non-profit hospital educates the public to think twice about our actions and their repercussions.

But not only that! The Turtle Hospital rescues injured sea turtles everywhere around the Keys, be it because they ingested hooks, because they damaged their shell in a boat collision, or because they got caught in fishing nets. They’ve rescued and rehabilitated over 1000 sea turtles since their opening in 1989!

Good to know: they frequently release rehabilitated turtles back into the sea. Dates are always announced on their website, so if you time your visit right you might be able to take part in that touching, memorable event!

Feed tarpons at Robbie’s Marina

Guys, I was legit scared about feeding the tarpons. As you know I am scared of pretty much everything and that includes, of course, fish the size of my legs (yeah, these bastards can weigh up to a whopping 8 feet long / 280 pounds) that jump out of the water to catch their snack. As a grown woman on assignment, I sucked it up and fed the ‘damn tarpons – although I can’t guarantee I didn’t let out a scream or two.

Board the original African Queen

Despite the fact that I have never seen the movie I am well aware of just how big an icon the African Queen is, i.e. the 1951 film starring the illustrious Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. The ship used in the movie no longer cruises down Congolese rivers; instead, it has been lovingly restored (with steam engine and all!) and sits in the Port Largo marina.

Taste the local cuisine at Marker 88

You can trust chef Bobby Stoky of Marker 88 to cook you the best meal you’ll have in the Florida Keys. His menu consists of dishes he ate as a child and that are intrinsically part of the Keys cuisine. In other words, lots of flavourful and expertly-executed fish and seafood.I opted for the coconut battered shrimp and the mahi Martinique, an intriguing French-Florida fusion dish that almost had me licking the plate clean.

The beachside restaurant is definitely one of the can’t-miss things to do in the Florida Keys. Likewise for their bar, where you can order their popular watermelon mojito. Bonus point for Kyle Chandler, who was dining there after a day of shooting on the nearby set of Bloodine (which is a riveting series with wanderlust-inducing cinematography, by the way).

Visit the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory

What species of butterfly can you name besides the monarch? Don’t worry, I would not have been able to answer this prior to my visit at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory. Their tropical greenhouse is home to over 600 species of butterflies. Including the notably elusive blue morpho butterfly and the 11-inch wide Owl butterfly! A fun place to visit if you enjoy macro photography and wildlife!

Of course, tanning is one of the most popular things to do in Fort Lauderdale. With over 3000 hours of bright sunshine per year, Florida is the Sunshine State after all! But aside form that, there are dozens of activities and sightseeing spots just waiting to be discovered.

Bonnet House

As one of the few  U.S. National Register of Historic Places in the area, Bonnet House holds a special place in the locals’ hearts. It was first acquired in 1895 by a successful Chicago lawyer. Then, the historic house was offered to artist Frederic Clay Bartlett in 1919 and decorated by his artistically-inclined wife Evelyn Lilly, who embellished it with decorative elements from her travels around the world. Blues, yellows, animal prints and lavish gardens abound, making Bonnet House a historic mansion museum like no other.

International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum

Swimming aficionados, rejoice! Fort Lauderdale is where the swimming party is at thanks to the hall of fame museum, entirely dedicated to this sport.

The multi-faceted exhibition notably acknowledges the achievements of the world’s 600 greatest aquatic athletes. It features rare photos, Olympic medals, trophies, memorabilia and objects d’art, including artifacts dating from the days of ancient Assyria.

Las Olas Boulevard

Fort Lauderdale’s rejuvenation had a huge effect on the local cuisine. Las Olas Boulevard, for example, is now the playground of many famous and imaginative chefs. To summarize, some of the most popular eateries include:

• Rocco’s Tacos & Tequila Bar (complete with made-to-table guacamole)
• Asia Bay (canal-side Japanese restaurant with a fabulous wine list)
• Café de Paris
• Likewise, there are also fun food tours in Fort Lauderdale that will certainly please all gourmet travellers

Snorkelling & diving

Ocean temperature in Florida ranges from 72 degrees in the winter to 80 in the summer… thank you, Gulf Stream!

Indeed, Fort Lauderdale’s waters are warm and welcoming year-round. It’s the perfect excuse to go and discover the largest collection of warm-water wrecks in the Western world (including a 1900’s 325-foot steamship and a 175-foot U.S. Coast Guard tender ship) and 75 artificial reefs.

But what makes Fort Lauderdale’s diving scene even more spectacular is the beach diving opportunities. In fact, this is the only place in the continental United States to snorkel and dive on a living coral reef-straight off the beach! Snorkelling in Fort Lauderdale is easy, safe, and utterly fascinating.

Sunrise spotting

Because of its unbeatable location on the east coast of Florida, Fort Lauderdale boasts some of the most dramatic sunrises in the world.

Understandably, the early wake-up call can be somewhat of a rebuttal. On the other hand, sunrises in Florida are definitely worth getting up for especially if enjoyed with coffee in hand on a quiet beach like the one at the boat-shaped B-Ocean Resort. Every morning holds a different surprise!

Flamingo Gardens

Welcome to 60 acres of tropical paradise! This wildlife sanctuary is now the habitat of over 3000 species of rare and exotic, tropical, subtropical, and native plants including the largest trees in the state. In addition, it’s home to Florida native wildlife like panthers, flamingos, bobcats, eagles and many others – 83 species in total!

The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit providing a safe and nurtured shelter to permanently injured local birds and animals. Consequently, it’s often cited as one of the top attractions in Florida, and certainly one of the most enlightening.

Water Taxi

Did you know Fort Lauderdale is home to over 165 miles of waterways? Often nicknamed the “Venice of North America”, Fort Lauderdale’s canals are home to some of the most expensive real estate and yatches in the United States. In fact, they can both be admired from the city’s water taxi extensive network which covers all main attractions with live commentary from knowledgeable and witty personnel. It isn’t the fastest way to get around, but it sure is the most entertaining.

With just 24 hours to spare, I explored the hilly historic centre, filled my lungs with salty sea air, ate my weight in ice cream, but most importantly, I discovered a largely underrated archipelago and a facet of America I didn’t know existed.

The colourful houses of San Juan

While most guidebooks point in the direction of defensive fortresses and focus on the military heritage of the capital, what really made my heart sway was the technicolour display of centennial houses.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, though; just two years shy of 400, San Juan is the second oldest European-established capital in the Americas — and a UNESCO World Heritage Site to boot.

With no itinerary in hand and several hours to spare, I sauntered aimlessly in Old San Juan with the vigorous Atlantic Ocean as my sole point of reference. Up and down the cobblestone hills, I walked past emerald, cerulean, magenta, and tangerine facades, a photogenic rainbow-hued ensemble whose attractiveness is only heightened by the unique colonial-meets-Caribbean architectural features.

Throw in a healthy population of vivid bougainvillea, wooden balconies, Latin rhythms, and sweeping views of the ocean, and you’ve got yourself quite the living postcard.
